Recently, I was invited to an event in Hackney which displayed young peoples work from the surrounding area in the fashion industry. Now, many of these designers were 17-25, yet their pieces of art were so incredible, and the collections themselves were so beautifully crafted and thought over. I was astonished to see people my age creating such incredibly detailed, fashionable and crafted pieces of clothing, each garment was so individual and thought out. But what was so lovely, is that the designers then spoke to us, telling us their reasoning behind each piece – where, why and how they choose that material, that colour, that cut and style. The incredible thing is, they were so touched by the applause and the atmosphere in the village hall like room! Live music, Tamera from the x-factor, and a lot of families and friends were there to support this incredibly thoughtful event, and each designer I admired for not only the work, but the time and effort they had put into creating the pieces. It was just breathtaking to see these pieces down the catwalk, such an experience.

Fashion Promotion
Fashion Promotion in particular attracts me due to the career opportunities, allowing a range of professions to open up; fashion photography, editor of fashion magazines, fashion director as well as the vital skills of leadership and communication within the fast moving industry. Although fashion design is more the creation and start of fashion, this isn’t a desire of mine, as I would prefer study the individual units which make fashion; ethics, portrayal to the public and the change in clothing over time, understanding why and how decisions have arisen in the fashion sector. Fashion is something that I take deep pride in, as the initial judgement of others can be manipulated due to the choice of clothing, I believe it allows individuals to shine out and tell the world who they are, simply though the chosen outfit. The importance of the ethics and how fashion is portrayed to the younger and older generations is something I wish to understand to a higher level.
The truth behind fashion
Fashion is universal. Clothes are an extension of your personality, expressing yourself though the means of fashion; ‘you are what you wear’. My interests lie in the promotion, production and management of fashion; how it is portrayed to the public, why those shapes and colours were chosen, and the exact audiences targeted – as well as understanding the meaning and implications of fashion itself on the world. The manipulation of fashion over time, ethics, through gender and the change from nationalities excites me, meaning a larger knowledge of high fashion is accomplished.
Nicolas Oakwell
This has to have been the most breathtaking and incredible garment at London Fashion Weekend; the layers and layers of thousands of feathers, each layered and coloured perfectly to create the blend and contrast is just astonishing, the work, time and effort put into this piece simply amazes me of a true passion of creation.
As London Fashion Week came and went, a breeze of elegance and beauty drifted over the city, yet the week seems to fly by, without anytime to take in and process the work of those attending. LFW, every year is the highlight of my calendar, yet each year I have been so sucked up by reality and whats happening, I’ve never been able to attend. This year, however, was an exception as I visited the beautiful Somerest House for London Fashion Weekend. The experience alone was enough to leave me in shock, yet I was fortunate to take a seat and experience the incredible work of Nicolas Oakwell. Not only were his garments so much more alive in person, the sounds, the flowing of material and beads and the whole intimacy of the event was just breath taking. Words cannot describe the faces of those sitting on the front row as the thousand pound dresses drifted by them. The music was so peaceful and intricate, to compliment the incredible pieces he had created. It really does make you realise the impact true British designers have on us, and the amount of time and effort put into each piece was astonishing, each and everyone of us stood in a complete trance, watching the beautifully formed women parade there and back in the most delicate and elegant garments.
What is FASHION?
Fashion is something that people commonly overlook, as we are constantly submerged into it; yet fashion is so much more than just clothes and what we wear. Fashion is universal, and it is an extension of your personality, you are what you wear! The way you present yourself is so vital to the way you get treated in the world, as silly as it sounds, fashion is such an important element to everyday life. Although many are not interested, they have been forced to be part of the phenomenon in some shape or form; everyone buys and wears clothes. It is one of the largest industries in the world, and as it touches each and everyone of us on a day to day basis, it isn’t something that should be pushed aside and ignored; we simply need to educate those who wear the same fleece every day, for the last 20 years! Because at one point in time, the designer took the time to choose that exact colour, the exact texture and feel of the garment, yet fashion isn’t always admired for what it is. We have to have fashion, as the world is so fast paced, everything is constantly changing and updating, just like fashion. It is, in my opinion, one of the most dominate areas of work, and is one that people have such an interest for, why that colour? Why that material and style? WHY NOT! Fashion is whatever you want it to, it is the way we dress and present ourselves, but it is a small segment of the real you shining out, every single one of us has the opportunity to present ourselves in a different and unique way, we just don’t know it yet!
